Cumbria County Council re-opened the A591 with pedestrian access across what is now called "The Gap" for school children this morning. Two shuttle buses one from Grasmere and one from Keswick allowed children to get to their schools without a huge diversion after the A591 was partially destroyed by Storm Desmond.

The second phase of the plan is for a public transport service to be opened up on the East side of the Gap, to complement the walking route. This will allow the shuttle bus to make a single journey from Grasmere to Keswick.

The main repair of the A591 is in the hands of Highways England, they have yet to produce a schedule and timescale for the repair.
