Japanese Rover Sends First Video From an Asteroid
Asteroid Explorer “Hayabusa2” deployed the MINERVA-II1 rovers to explore the surface of asteroid Ryugu on 21st September 2018. They sent back stills and a short burst of colour footage from the surface of the asteroid – the first time this has been done.
Japan’s intrepid, hopping asteroid rovers have sent back footage and high-resolution imagery of the surface of the celestial body they have been exploring, according to tweets from Japan’s space agency. The rovers hop because the asteroid has a very low gravity and vehicles with wheels would float off into space.
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) controlled the mission to Ryugu. The MINERVA-II1 consists of two rovers, Rover-1A and Rover-1B, both landed on the surface of asteroid and sent back images and a short movie.
